Foxy in the Office

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

So I was scrounging around on some of the computers at work and I found a copy of Firefox, which made me think, “Hey, I should be running Firefox!” So I installed it.

And then version 3 came out. Unfortunately, I can’t install software on my computer, so my attempts to upgrade were in vain, and I was stuck with 2.0 (bleh.)

Then… today, as soon as I started Firefox, it said, “Updates available, click here to download.” Apparently, the updates ignore the “priveleges” settings, because I am now running a snazzy new copy of Firefox 3.02! Yay!

This is what has been bothering me

“It is said that during the persecution of the Papists by Queen Elizabeth, certain of the wealthy Catholics desired to save their lives by an open compliance with her intolerant laws, though they remained Romanists at heart. To their enquiry [sic] for direction it is reported that the Pope of that day replied, ‘Only let them give me their hearts, and they may for this time do as they are compelled to do.’ Whether the story is true or not, we may be sure that if the evil one can but keep the heart, he cares little what outward religion is practiced.” — Wisdom’s Request to Her Son. From Spurgeon’s notes.

Protestants, read carefully. He isn’t trying to say here that the Catholic is the evil one. Instead, he’s saying that if the Romanists believed they could keep their heart for God despite an outward lack of religion, then a wicked man can keep his heart for himself despite an outward zeal for God.

Where is my heart!

There it is.

So here I am, sitting at work, listening to ReignRadio.com, when, what should I hear? Well, one of the Old Hackers, a member of The Birds, told me one time that one of his favorite bands was Die Happy. (I seriously doubt you’re reading this, Jay.) I’d never heard of that band until today; I just assumed it was some heathen band. haha, I always thought he was such a bad [ahem, boy], and here that was a Christian band. Between moutain bikes, console emulators, and nerdy music, that guy was a true hacker and as stupid as it sounds, he was sort of a role model back then. hahaha Perspective changes everything.

Actually that band rocks, though.

Independence Day

Thursday, September 11th, 2008
Listen to our declaration

Listen to our testament
We’ve been given a revelation
We are sure of where we stand
So let the banner be unfurled
We’ve found the light of hope in a dying world

Hear the myth of modern man
You’re the god of your own land
They call you weak a spineless fool
Say you’ve given up your right to rule
But I have been to the land of me
And I know I was never free
Freedom came when I gave it all away

(Chorus)
That’s why I call it independence day
Call it independence day
Let the rockets blaze across the sky
Raise the flag of faith up high
Let the doubters call it what they may
It’s independence day

The world can crown another hundred kings
But I believe in better dreams
They may call it slavery
But the biggest chain I knew was me
So the idols tumble down
The walls of lies crumble to the ground
I know where salvation can be found
Let the idols tumple down

(Chorus)
So join in the celebration
It’s the birth of a holy nation
As people of light we are proud to say
It’s independence day

(Chorus)

At Wal-mart

Monday, September 8th, 2008

As many (read: all six, please bring your friends! :) of you know, I am an avid/loyal fan of independant music and Christian rock. Well, the other day, I was minding my own business, shopping for rice at Wal-mart, when what should I stumbleupon(.com), but a shiny new CD case containing an album by Remedy Drive!

Now, a little background might be in order here. I’ve been a loyal fan of Remedy Drive (known, during former stages of evolution as Remedy and The Aslan Band) since 1998. They’ve been honing their skills, evolving from the raw, “teen garage band” sound they started with, to a professional, yet truly talented and unique “indie rock” style. And although they’ve been received well whenever they open for better-known bands, and in spite of their dedicated, nation-wide following, they’ve struggled for years to get oficial recognition in Christian music circles by getting played on the radio, etc. Now, it looks like they’ve finally managed to sign with a major label. They’ve released 5 albums since their inception, but this is the first of their albums I’ve ever seen on the shelf.

And it deserves it’s prominent spot in the New Music section. This is the first Remedy Drive/Aslan Band album I’ve heard that didn’t have a single cheesy, over-lyricized track. Those of you who know about Remedy might be a little disappointed to discover that their signature acapella and instrumental tracks are missing from this particular release, but they more than make up for it with 11 completely original, peppy, hard rock tracks that leave you feeling like you’ve just taken a jog in the rain. They even have a (somewhat cheesy) PV on their homepage.

If you’re in town, go get a copy! If you like the album (and I guarantee you will), then support your local music scene and go back for more copies for your friends and family, so that Wal-mart will have to restock.

P.S. please don’t miss the other post I made today! :)

Has anyone heard this one?

Buddhism is Blatantly Immoral

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

“Karma explains the problem of sufferings, the mystery of the so-called fate and predestination of some religions, and above all the apparent inequality of mankind.”

“Maitri or Metta in Pali (Loving Kindness) and Karuna (Compassion) to all living beings including animals. Buddhism strictly forbids animal sacrifice for whatever reason. Vegetarianism is recommended but not compulsory;” HOWEVER, “Buddhism goes beyond doing good and being good. One must not be attached to good deeds or the idea of doing good; otherwise it is just another form of craving.” Instead, “In Buddhism, the ultimate objective of followers/practitioners is enlightenment and/or liberation.” And, “The idea of sin or original sin has no place in Buddhism. Also, sin should not be equated to suffering.”

(These quotations are from http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/snapshot01.htm) As this page explains, the goals of Buddhism are completely self-serving. There is no sin, and there is no special need for or attachment to good works, or to other people. The goal of enlightenment, (Knowledge is the idol of Buddhism) takes precedence over love for the Lord or for others. In fact, love, as a Christian understands it, constitutes WRONG THINKING and WRONG ACTIONS (there is no sin) for a Buddhist.

Beware. Your Buddhist friends don’t care what happens to you.
