Eat your heart out, Machiavelli.

Who needs military might, when you have the power of lies at your disposal?

The article below is about the upcoming Olympics in Beijing. Please especially note the last paragraph on page 2. I saw a lot of this sort of thing while I was in Japan. And, while the Japanese and Chinese hate it when you compare their cultures, there are many, many striking similarities which hark back to the undeniable historical fact of mass cultural borrowing.

This article has to do with the importance of keeping promises in Asian society,… or rather, the lack of importance, despite lip service. I’m not trying to say, “All Asians blah blah blah,” just, “this is the way society itself is set up over there”– at least in Japan and China.

On the upshot, this sort of thing should put to rest all the conspiracy theories about supposed corruption and dictatorial fascism in the US. Somehow, the Truth always seems to venerate itself.

And in defense of the Chinese government, I have to wonder why journalists are so interested in Falun Gong when they are supposedly reporting on The Games?

Brazilian Christian Punk Rock!?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

These guys are insanely good. Well, OK, it’s punk rock so don’t expect much but the sound is surprisingly raw and nice. Plus they have that, “yeah, we don’t speak English… SO WHAT?” attitude.

Blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah. Blah blah, blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah.

Blah blah blah…

Blah blah blah blah, blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah. Blah blah blah.

I feel great

In this new house, you can get the internet everywhere except my room. Today, I bought an ethernet cable and now my room is connected too. yay!

Tonight, I’m ripping my CDs and putting the tracks on my MP3 player while I work on my homework. [translation omitted ...], spending the night alone in this room, with my music, is a surprisingly refreshing prospect. hehehe

I hope morning never comes…

Web-based Japanese Input Method

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I found a great site for those of you like me who need to input Japanese on a daily basis, but don’t necessarily have access to an input method on every machine you use. Now, if you have internet access, you can go to http://ajaxime.chasen.org/. Keep the site open in a separate tab. Type in a sentence, then hit shift+home, ctrl+C, switch tabs using ctrl+tab (or applications using alt+tab), and paste in the text you typed with ctrl+V. can’t take more than a fraction of a second and you never have to take your hands off the keyboard.

Rush

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Something must be horribly wrong with me; I actually had fun at work today. I got that old rush of adrenaline, the one you get when you get to the ending sequence in a video game, without cheating, or when you finally get a particularly stubborn piece of code to run right. At work… !

I admit it!

Popeye is my roll model. Because he has big muscles, he’s tough, he’s mean, he doesn’t mess around with palookas, and he eats his spinach. Too bad he doesn’t seem to like spaghetti….
